My 5 year old doesn't deserve my temper

Tonight, for example, I was very tired after a long day at work. My 5 year old was tired as well.
He was very naughty, calling everyone mean, refusing to be quite as I was trying to rest a little.
I kept receiving phone calls as was getting extremely irritated with everything.
I swatted his bottom and told him to shut up and sit down. He then sat in the chair moaning for mommy and telling me I was mean non-stop.
I lost it telling him to go find his Mommy who wasn't home and then erupted yelling and spanking his butt with a Flip Flop. It left his bottom red but didn't leave any permanent marks (Thank God).
I have been doing this more and more lately and I have to get some control. Please help.
